Removing the Shackles From Your Wings
Sure your chances of success improve by learning the most effective techniques to meet your goals. A bird with the strongest wings under the perfect wind conditions cannot fly if it's wings are fettered and shackled. It's vain if the bird sits there asking what else it needs to be able to fly, maybe more lessons, maybe an MBA, maybe if its parents had money to send him to flight school, maybe if it's feathers weren't black, white, yellow, brown, red, or maybe if his girlfriend/boyfriend was supportive and rich, it could actually fly.
There are countless varieties of shackles you could have picked up along the way. These are beliefs and habits that are totally counter to your desires and goals. So, the shackles we list here are going to cover most but not all the ways in which you can be holding yourself back. Imagine how much more powerful you would be if you stopped fighting yourself. Imagine if instead of spending half your energy crawling forward and the other half dragging yourself, you were free to spend 100% of your power moving in just one direction.
Since I cannot list a full inventory of shackles here, I will simply give you some identifying traits of a shackle. First, a shackle is circumstantial. It may have actually been correct in one circumstance but since no two events are exactly alike, It is never again useful or correct. Second, a shackle manifests itself in daily speech. Third, a shackle is a hypnotic belief. One example of this is, "I'm such an idiot."
Those four words are not the shackle, they are the verbal manifestation of the hypnotic belief shackle. Under hypnosis, if you are told that you are a chicken, you'll hop around and cluck like a chicken. If you tell yourself that you are an idiot, you'll start believing it, then, you'll start sabotaging your goals because we all love it when what we believe in comes true.
Here's a list of the verbal manifestions the most common belief shackles:
I'm an idiot
I'm no good with numbers
I'm not athletic
I'm not romantic
I suck at math
I suck at writing
I have a terrible memory
I can never remember anything
I can't ever remember names
I'm no good with directions
I hate meeting people
I'm an introvert
My intuition stinks
I'm a poor judge of character
You can immediately see how powerful these shackles can be when you have a career or romantic opportunity in front of you. Any one of these beliefs cripple any power you have. But these beliefs are not only internal. They are external as well:
Men are liars
Women are psychotic
Work is hard
Work is a pain
Jobs are not supposed to be fun
Corporations are evil
(insert a race) are idiots
Money doesn't grow on trees
Great opportunities only come once in a blue moon
You're only young once
Life is hard
You can't have your cake and eat it too
Don't ask for too much
You have to be "realistic"
You can immediately see how each of these shackles turn princes into frogs and swans into ugly ducklings. The first set makes you impotent. The next set makes the world around you infertile. No wonder why you keep repeating the same patterns over and over again in vain. And each time, you further reinforce your belief structure. Eventually, with these beliefs, you will die miserable yet happy that your beliefs were all correct.
There are two other common manifestations of beliefs that hold you back. The words for these are can't and should. Saying, "I can't come to dinner tonite." Is totally disempowering. 'Can't' means that you are physically or mentally disabled. Saying that word puts your entire psychology and physiology on notice that you are disabled. You say the word 'can't' often enough, and you end up in thick layers of your own suffocating spiderweb. Instead, say, "I WILL not be coming to dinner tonight." This empowers you. It tells your listener and yourself that you take actions based on your "WILL." - You make your WILL happen.
These next of these is the word "should." "Should" is a word that implies probability within a set of finite permutations. In otherwords, "should" only applies to situations where you already know all the possible outcomes. A game of cards, fixing a car, cooking a meal, and anything else mechanical can use the word should. But anything else in life as complex as human interaction must not be "shoulded" on. "Should" limits the field of possibilities. Saying "should" puts you in a false seat of omnicience whereas you may be better off in the sidelines as an observer.
